Description
Overview of the medicine
Abac 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, primarily in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically recommended as a 125 mg suspension for adults; higher strengths/forms are generally used. Consult physician for specific adult dosages.

Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment. Caution is advised in severe impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min).
Hepatic_impairment
Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment, as azithromycin is metabolized in the liver.
How to Take
Oral administration. Administer once daily. It can be taken with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 2-3 hours of administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the bile; a small percentage (about 6%) excreted in urine.
Half life
Terminal elimination half-life is 2-4 days, allowing for once-daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is about 37%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide antibiotic.
- •History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use.
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased serum digoxin levels, monitor digoxin levels.
Antacids
May decrease peak serum levels of azithromycin. Administer azithromycin at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids.
Warfarin
Increased anticoagulant effect, monitor INR closely.
Nelfinavir
Increased azithromycin concentration, monitor for increased side effects.
Ergot alkaloids
Potential for acute ergotism, concurrent use generally not recommended.
Storage
Store the dry powder for suspension below 30°C, away from moisture. After reconstitution, store the suspension at room temperature (below 30°C) or in a refrigerator (2-8°C) as specified in the product leaflet. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and reversible hearing loss. Management involves gastric lavage and general supportive measures as clinically indicated.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Azithromycin is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
