Description
Overview of the medicine
Abex 30 mg syrup contains Ambroxol Hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent used to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. It is commonly used for respiratory conditions associated with thick, viscous mucus.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) 3 times daily. In severe conditions, dosage may be increased to 15 ml (3 teaspoonfuls) 2 times daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for the elderly, but caution is advised in those with severe hepatic or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
In severe renal impairment, the dosage should be reduced or the interval between doses extended.
How to Take
Can be taken with or without food. Measure the dose accurately using the provided measuring spoon or cup.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol acts as a mucolytic by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides, leading to a reduction in mucus viscosity. It also stimulates serous cells of the bronchial glands, resulting in increased production of less viscous mucus, and enhances ciliary activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes (mucolytic effect)
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally (about 90%) as metabolites, with a small portion unchanged.
Half life
Approximately 10 hours (terminal half-life)
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached after 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to various inactive metabolites, mainly by conjugation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any component of the formulation.
- •Rare hereditary conditions that may be incompatible with an excipient of the product (e.g., fructose intolerance for syrups containing sorbitol).
Drug Interactions
Antitussives (e.g., Codeine, Dextromethorphan)
Concomitant use with antitussives is not recommended as it may lead to a dangerous accumulation of secretions due to the suppressed cough reflex.
Antibiotics (e.g., Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, Erythromycin, Doxycycline)
Ambroxol may increase the penetration of some antibiotics into bronchial secretions and sputum.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment. Gastric lavage may be considered in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
