Description
Overview of the medicine
Acaluxen 100 mg capsule is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for the relief of pain, inflammation, and fever.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose is 100 mg orally, 2-3 times daily, preferably after meals. Do not exceed 300 mg per day.
Elderly
Lower doses may be required, and patients should be carefully monitored for adverse effects. Initial dose of 50 mg twice daily may be considered.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage reduction may be necessary in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment. Avoid in severe renal failure.
How to Take
Take Acaluxen 100 mg capsule orally with a full glass of water, preferably after food or milk, to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Do not crush or chew the capsule.
Mechanism of Action
Acaluxen works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, specifically COX-1 and COX-2, which are responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever. By reducing prostaglandin production, acaluxen alleviates these symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Pain relief may begin within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted mainly via the kidneys as metabolites and their conjugates; a small amount is excreted in feces.
Half life
Approximately 2-4 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by oxidation and conjugation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to acaluxen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs
- Active gastrointestinal bleeding or peptic ulcer disease
- Severe heart failure, renal failure, or hepatic failure
- Third trimester of pregnancy
- History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
Drug Interactions
Lithium
May increase plasma lithium levels, leading to toxicity.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate toxicity.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding.
ACE inhibitors and Diuretics
May reduce the hypotensive effect of these drugs and increase the risk of renal impairment.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
Increased risk of bleeding.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, lethargy, drowsiness, and gastrointestinal bleeding. In rare cases, hypertension, acute renal failure, respiratory depression, and coma may occur. Management is primarily supportive and symptomatic. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered if ingestion is recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C (first and second trimesters); Category D (third trimester). Avoid in the third trimester due to potential premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus. Use with caution during lactation; consult a doctor before use.
