Description
Overview of the medicine
Acufer 30 mg Capsule is an iron supplement used for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. It contains Iron Polymaltose Complex, which is a non-ionic iron preparation known for better gastrointestinal tolerability compared to traditional iron salts.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 capsule once or twice daily, or as directed by the physician. Treatment should continue until normal hemoglobin values are achieved and iron stores are replenished (typically 3-5 months).
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution should be exercised in patients with pre-existing medical conditions. Consult physician.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is usually required, but use with caution in severe renal impairment. Consult physician.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with or immediately after a meal to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. Do not chew or crush the capsule; swallow whole.
Mechanism of Action
Iron Polymaltose Complex provides elemental iron, which is essential for the formation of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and other iron-containing enzymes. Iron is absorbed in the small intestine, transported to the bone marrow, and incorporated into red blood cells to combat anemia.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement in iron deficiency symptoms and hemoglobin levels typically begins within a few weeks of consistent therapy.
Excretion
Excretion of iron is minimal and occurs primarily via faeces (unabsorbed iron), urine, sweat, and shedding of mucosal cells.
Half life
Iron is not excreted rapidly, but rather conserved and reused in the body. It does not have a typical elimination half-life like other drugs; instead, it is stored in the body.
Absorption
Iron Polymaltose Complex is absorbed via an active regulatory mechanism, primarily in the duodenum and jejunum, leading to controlled absorption and lower risk of iron overload. Absorption is generally better than inorganic iron salts and less affected by food.
Metabolism
Absorbed iron is transported to the bone marrow for erythropoiesis, stored as ferritin or hemosiderin in reticuloendothelial cells, and incorporated into hemoglobin, myoglobin, and iron-containing enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Iron Polymaltose Complex or any of its components
- •Iron overload conditions (e.g., hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis)
- •Anemias not caused by iron deficiency (e.g., megaloblastic anemia, hemolytic anemia)
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Antacids may reduce iron absorption, although the effect is less pronounced with Iron Polymaltose Complex. Separate administration by several hours.
Bisphosphonates
Iron may interfere with the absorption of bisphosphonates. Administer iron at a different time of day.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Iron may decrease the absorption of these antibiotics. Administer iron at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after these medications.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of iron overdose may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, lethargy, and circulatory collapse. In severe cases, it can be fatal. Seek immediate medical attention. Treatment may involve gastric lavage, emesis, and chelation therapy with deferoxamine.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Acufer is generally considered safe and is often prescribed for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy and lactation. Consult your doctor for appropriate dosage.
