Description
Overview of the medicine
Aculizer Inhaler contains Salbutamol, a short-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist, used for rapid relief of bronchospasm in asthma and other conditions like COPD. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, making it easier to breathe.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 puffs (100-200 mcg) as needed, up to 4 times a day.
Elderly
Same as adults, but monitor for side effects.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment usually needed, but use with caution.
How to Take
Administered via inhalation. Shake the inhaler well before each use. Exhale fully, place the mouthpiece in the mouth, press down on the canister while inhaling deeply and slowly. Hold breath for 10 seconds, then exhale slowly. Wait one minute between puffs if more than one is needed.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta2-adrenergic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle, causing relaxation of the muscle and bronchodilation. It also inhibits the release of mast cell mediators.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
5-15 minutes after inhalation
Excretion
Primarily excreted in urine as unchanged drug and its metabolite.
Half life
4-6 hours
Absorption
Inhaled Salbutamol is rapidly absorbed, both from the lungs and the swallowed portion from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the formulation
- •Cardiovascular disorders (severe, uncontrolled)
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased risk of digoxin toxicity due to hypokalemia.
Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
Can exacerbate hypokalemia when co-administered with high doses of beta2-agonists.
Beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol)
May block the bronchodilatory effect of salbutamol and can cause severe bronchospasm in asthmatic patients.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from direct sunlight, heat, and frost. Do not puncture or incinerate the canister, even when empty. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremors, palpitations, headache, hypokalemia, and hyperglycemia. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic; cardiovascular monitoring may be required.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Salbutamol is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
