Description
Overview of the medicine
Adapalene 0.1% cream is a topical retinoid used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. It helps to clear existing acne lesions and prevent new ones from forming.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer of Adapel 0.1% cream to the affected areas of the face and/or trunk once daily in the evening after washing the skin.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For topical dermatological use only. Cleanse the affected area gently before application. Apply a thin film, avoiding contact with eyes, lips, nostrils, and mucous membranes. Wash hands after application.
Mechanism of Action
Adapalene modulates cellular differentiation, keratinization, and inflammatory processes. It binds to specific retinoic acid nuclear receptors, normalizing differentiation of follicular epithelial cells, which results in decreased microcomedone formation. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects are typically observed after 8-12 weeks of treatment.
Excretion
Excretion is primarily via the biliary route.
Half life
Not significantly applicable due to minimal systemic absorption; systemic levels are often below quantification limits.
Absorption
Systemic absorption of adapalene from topical application is low (typically <0.25 ng/mL plasma levels).
Metabolism
Metabolized primarily by O-demethylation, hydroxylation, and conjugation.
