Description
Overview of the medicine
Admox-DS 500 mg Capsule contains Amoxicillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usual dose is 250-500 mg every 8 hours, or 875 mg twice daily for severe infections. For Admox-DS 500 mg, typically 500 mg every 8 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required unless there is significant renal impairment. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 10-30 mL/min, 250-500 mg every 12 hours. For creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min, 250-500 mg every 24 hours.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally with a glass of water, with or without food. It is recommended to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by the doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via tubular secretion and glomerular filtration. Approximately 60-70% of an oral dose is excreted in the urine within 6 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Metabolism
Limited metabolism, mainly excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, any other penicillin, or to any of the excipients.
- •History of severe immediate hypersensitivity reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to another beta-lactam agent (e.g., cephalosporin, carbapenem or monobactam).
Drug Interactions
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of skin rash, especially in patients with hyperuricemia.
Methotrexate
Reduced renal tubular secretion of methotrexate, leading to increased plasma concentrations and potential toxicity.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives (rarely reported).
Warfarin and other oral anticoagulants
Increased risk of bleeding, monitor INR.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and fluid and electrolyte imbalance may occur. Renal impairment may lead to amoxicillin crystalluria. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis can be used to remove amoxicillin from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus. Amoxicillin is excreted into breast milk in small amounts; generally considered safe during lactation, but monitor for potential adverse effects in the infant (e.g., diarrhea, candidiasis).
