Description
Overview of the medicine
Alben 200 mg Suspension contains Albendazole, an anthelmintic medication used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections, including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, pinworms, and tapeworms. It works by preventing the worms from absorbing sugar (glucose), which is vital for their survival, leading to their death.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For common intestinal worms: 400 mg (10 ml of suspension) as a single dose. For severe infections, repeat after 2-3 weeks.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally required, but caution is advised in patients with hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment required.
How to Take
Shake the suspension well before use. Can be taken with or without food, but a fatty meal may increase absorption. No dietary restrictions are usually necessary.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole selectively binds to beta-tubulin, a structural protein of microtubules, in intestinal and other parasitic cells. This inhibits tubulin polymerization and disrupts the parasite's glucose uptake, leading to glycogen depletion, decreased ATP production, and eventually immobility and death of the parasite.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies by infection type, typically within hours for single-dose treatments.
Excretion
Primarily via urine as metabolites, with some biliary excretion.
Half life
Albendazole sulfoxide: 8-12 hours.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (less than 5%). Absorption is significantly enhanced with a fatty meal. Rapidly metabolized in the liver to albendazole sulfoxide.
Metabolism
Extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver to its primary active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to albendazole or any component of the formulation.
- •Pregnancy (especially first trimester).
- •Children under 2 years for certain indications without medical supervision.
Drug Interactions

Dexamethasone
May increase albendazole sulfoxide plasma concentrations.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and abdominal pain. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage or activated charcoal if recent ingestion.
