Description
Overview of the medicine
Albendazole is an anthelmintic medication used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections. The 400 mg chewable tablet is commonly used for single-dose treatment of intestinal helminthiasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For common intestinal worm infections (e.g., ascariasis, hookworm, pinworm, trichuriasis): 400 mg as a single dose.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally needed, but caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary.
How to Take
The tablet should be chewed or crushed and swallowed with water, preferably after a meal.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole acts by inhibiting microtubule polymerization in susceptible helminths by binding to beta-tubulin, leading to impaired glucose uptake and depletion of glycogen stores, resulting in the worm's death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Variable, depending on the worm type and location.
Excretion
Primarily via urine as metabolites; a small amount is excreted in bile.
Half life
Albendazole sulfoxide (active metabolite) has a plasma half-life of about 8-12 hours.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (less than 5%); absorption is increased with a fatty meal.
Metabolism
Rapidly and extensively metabolized in the liver to albendazole sulfoxide (active) and other metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to albendazole or any component
- Pregnancy (especially first trimester)
Drug Interactions
Cimetidine, Dexamethasone, Praziquantel
May increase plasma levels of albendazole sulfoxide.
Ritonavir, Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Phenobarbital
May decrease plasma levels of albendazole sulfoxide.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be initiated. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should not be used in pregnant women, particularly during the first trimester, unless the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during and for one month after treatment. Excreted in breast milk, use with caution in lactating mothers.
