Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug used in the treatment of various worm infestations.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
400 mg as a single dose for ascariasis, enterobiasis, hookworm, and trichuriasis. For strongyloidiasis, 400 mg once daily for 3 days. For taeniasis, 400 mg once daily for 3 days.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, adjust based on renal and hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally with food, especially a fatty meal, to enhance absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole inhibits tubulin polymerization, resulting in the loss of cytoplasmic microtubules, leading to impaired uptake of glucose and depletion of energy stores in the susceptible helminths.

Absorption

Drug Interactions
Praziquantel
May increase plasma concentrations of albendazole.

Storage
Store below 30°C, protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
In case of overdose, provide symptomatic and supportive treatment. Activated charcoal may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Contraindicated in pregnancy. Use with caution in breastfeeding women; benefits should outweigh risks.
