Description
Overview of the medicine
Alchek-DS eye drop contains Ketorolac Tromethamine, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), used to relieve eye itching caused by seasonal allergic conjunctivitis and to treat inflammation and pain after cataract surgery.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For allergic conjunctivitis: 1 drop in the affected eye four times a day. For post-operative inflammation: 1 drop in the affected eye four times a day, starting 24 hours after surgery and continuing for up to two weeks.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid to form a pouch, and place the drop inside. Close your eye gently. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye. Wash hands before and after use.
Mechanism of Action
Ketorolac Tromethamine works by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, pain, and itching. By blocking prostaglandin production, it reduces these symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour for pain relief, longer for inflammation reduction.
Excretion
Mainly renal excretion for any systemically absorbed drug, but systemic absorption is negligible.
Half life
Plasma half-life of systemically absorbed drug is about 5-6 hours, but local ocular half-life is not well-defined due to minimal absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption following ocular administration. Primarily acts locally.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism in the eye; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac Tromethamine or any component of the formulation.
- •Patients who have previously experienced hypersensitivity reactions to NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen) may be at risk for similar reactions.
- •Should not be used with contact lenses in place.
Drug Interactions
Topical NSAIDs
Concurrent use of other topical NSAIDs may increase the potential for adverse effects, especially corneal healing issues.
Corticosteroids
Concurrent use of topical corticosteroids may slow or delay healing and increase the potential for adverse corneal events.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Overdose with ophthalmic solutions is unlikely due to limited absorption. If accidental overdose occurs, flush the eye with copious amounts of water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution advised during lactation; consult a doctor.
