Description
Overview of the medicine
Aldaben 200 mg Suspension is an anthelmintic medication containing Albendazole, used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections in the intestines and other tissues.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For common intestinal helminthiasis (e.g., ascariasis, hookworm, pinworm, whipworm): 400 mg as a single dose. For strongyloidiasis or taeniasis: 400 mg once daily for 3 days. For neurocysticercosis or hydatid disease: Dosage and duration vary, often 400 mg twice daily with food for several weeks to months, under medical supervision.
Elderly
Generally similar to adult dosage, but caution and monitoring are advised, especially in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is considered necessary for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. For severe impairment, caution is advised, and monitoring is recommended due to potential accumulation of metabolites.
How to Take
Shake the suspension well before use. Take Aldaben 200 mg Suspension orally with food, especially a fatty meal, to enhance absorption. For young children or individuals who have difficulty swallowing, the suspension can be easier to administer.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole works by selectively binding to beta-tubulin in intestinal and other parasitic worms, inhibiting microtubule polymerization. This leads to a disruption of glucose uptake and energy metabolism in the parasites, ultimately immobilizing and killing them.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Variable depending on the type of infection, usually within a few days to weeks.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine as metabolites (less than 1% as unchanged drug). Biliary excretion also occurs.
Half life
Albendazole has a short half-life; its active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide, has a plasma half-life of 8-12 hours.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (less than 5%). Absorption is significantly increased when taken with a fatty meal.
Metabolism
Extensive and rapid first-pass metabolism in the liver to the primary active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide, and then to other inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Albendazole or any component of the formulation.
- Pregnancy, especially during the first trimester (due to potential teratogenicity).
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
May decrease albendazole sulfoxide levels.
Cimetidine
May increase plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide.
Praziquantel
May increase plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide.
Theophylline
Albendazole may decrease theophylline clearance; monitor theophylline levels.
Dexamethasone
May increase plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide.
Grapefruit Juice
May increase absorption, potentially leading to higher systemic exposure.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, and dizziness. There is no specific antidote. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage or activated charcoal if ingestion was recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Albendazole is embryotoxic and teratogenic in animals. It should not be used in pregnant women, especially during the first trimester. If used in women of childbearing potential, they should be advised to use effective contraception during treatment and for at least one month after. It is unknown whether albendazole or its metabolites are excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.

Lab Monitoring
- Liver function tests (LFTs) should be performed before the start of each treatment cycle and every two weeks during prolonged therapy, especially for hydatid disease and neurocysticercosis.
- Complete blood count (CBC) should be monitored at the beginning of therapy and every two weeks during prolonged high-dose therapy due to the risk of bone marrow suppression.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients to take Aldaben 200 mg Suspension with a fatty meal to improve absorption, especially for systemic infections.
- Emphasize the importance of completing the full prescribed course, even if symptoms improve, to ensure complete eradication of parasites.
- Counsel women of childbearing potential on the need for effective contraception during and for one month post-treatment.
- For prolonged therapy, stress the necessity of regular liver function and complete blood count monitoring due to potential adverse effects.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of medication as prescribed, even if you feel better.
- Take the suspension with food to maximize absorption and minimize stomach upset.
- Shake the bottle well before each use.
- Maintain good personal hygiene to prevent re-infection and spread of worms.
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
Albendazole may cause dizziness in some individuals. Patients should be advised to exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until they know how the medication affects them.
Lifestyle Advice
- Practice good hand hygiene, especially after using the toilet and before eating.
- Ensure food and water are clean and safe to prevent parasitic infections.
