Description
Overview of the medicine
Algicon 500 mg Chewable Tablet is an antacid and antireflux preparation used for the symptomatic relief of heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux. It forms a protective raft over the stomach contents to prevent reflux.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 12 years: Chew 1-2 tablets after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times a day. Maximum 8 tablets per day.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required for the elderly.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in patients with significant renal impairment due to sodium and calcium content.
How to Take
Tablets should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. Do not swallow whole. Take after meals and at bedtime.
Mechanism of Action
Sodium alginate reacts with gastric acid to form a viscous gel (raft) that floats on top of the stomach contents, physically blocking reflux. Calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate provide immediate antacid action by neutralizing stomach acid.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes
Excretion
Sodium alginate is excreted unchanged in faeces. Absorbed calcium is excreted via kidneys. Absorbed bicarbonate is excreted via kidneys and lungs.
Half life
Not applicable for alginate (local action); antacid effects typically last 1-3 hours.
Absorption
Sodium alginate is not absorbed systemically; it acts locally in the stomach. Calcium carbonate is absorbed to a limited extent, mainly contributing to systemic antacid effects. Sodium bicarbonate is also absorbed and can affect systemic pH.
Metabolism
Not applicable for alginate (not absorbed). Absorbed ions (Ca2+, HCO3-) are handled by normal physiological processes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- •Severe renal impairment (due to calcium and sodium content)
- •Hypercalcaemia
Drug Interactions
Iron preparations
Reduced absorption of iron. Separate administration times.
Tetracyclines & Fluoroquinolones
May reduce absorption due to chelation. Take Algicon at least 2 hours before or after these antibiotics.
Thyroid hormones (Levothyroxine)
Reduced absorption. Separate administration by several hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely to cause serious systemic effects due to minimal absorption. Symptoms may include abdominal distension, bloating, and discomfort. Management is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation when used as directed, but consult a doctor. The alginate component is not absorbed.
