Overview of the medicine
Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine with sedative and anxiolytic properties. It is used to treat anxiety, tension, pruritus due to allergic conditions, and as a pre-operative sedative.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Anxiety: 50-100 mg orally 3-4 times daily. Pruritus: 25 mg orally 3-4 times daily.
Elderly
Start with lower doses, e.g., 25 mg daily.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction may be necessary. Administer 50% of the usual dose.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. Measure syrup carefully with a dosing spoon or syringe.
Mechanism of Action
Hydroxyzine acts as an H1 receptor antagonist, blocking histamine receptors in the brain and periphery. It also has anticholinergic and mild dopamine blocking properties, contributing to its sedative and anxiolytic effects.
