Description
Overview of the medicine
Ambroxol is a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory diseases associated with viscous mucus. It helps to thin and clear mucus from the airways.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
30 mg (3 tablets) two to three times daily. May be reduced to 30 mg once daily for maintenance or severe renal impairment.
Elderly
Same as adults, but may require dose adjustment in case of severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment may be necessary; consult a physician.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. Drink plenty of fluids to help thin mucus.
Mechanism of Action
It works by stimulating serous glands, promoting lysosomal enzyme release from mucus-secreting cells, and depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides, thereby decreasing the viscosity of sputum and making it easier to cough up.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Mucolytic effect usually begins within 30 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly via the kidneys (about 90%) as metabolites, with a small amount excreted unchanged.
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours.
Absorption
Rapid and almost complete from oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily to dibromanthranilic acid and glucuronide conjugates.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ambroxol or any component of the formulation.
- •Patients with active peptic ulcer disease (use with caution as it may cause gastric irritation).
Drug Interactions
Cough suppressants
Concomitant use with antitussives (cough suppressants) is not recommended as it may lead to a dangerous accumulation of secretions due to the impaired cough reflex.
Antibiotics (e.g., Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, Erythromycin, Doxycycline)
Ambroxol may increase the penetration of these antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dyspepsia. Management is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage or induced vomiting may be considered if taken recently.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. Use in later trimesters and during lactation only if clearly needed and benefits outweigh risks, after consulting a physician. Ambroxol is excreted in breast milk.
