Description
Overview of the medicine
Ambrotus 15 mg syrup contains Ambroxol Hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory diseases associated with abnormal mucus secretion and impaired mucus transport.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 12 years: Initially 10 ml (30 mg) 2-3 times daily for the first 2-3 days, then 5 ml (15 mg) 3 times daily. Or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, but caution is advised in those with severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
In severe renal impairment, dose frequency or amount should be reduced.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Use the provided measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol works by stimulating serous gland cells, leading to increased serous secretion and decreased mucus viscosity. It also activates mucociliary clearance, facilitating the removal of mucus from the respiratory tract.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes
Excretion
Excreted mainly by the kidneys (approximately 90% as metabolites, 10% as unchanged drug).
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours
Absorption
Rapid and almost completely absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentration is reached in 1-2.5 hours. Oral bioavailability is about 70-80%.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism to inactive metabolites (e.g., dibromanthranilic acid) mainly by CYP3A4.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol Hydrochloride or Bromhexine.
- Patients with rare hereditary conditions of fructose intolerance (due to sorbitol content in some syrup formulations).
Drug Interactions
Cough suppressants (Antitussives)
Concomitant use with cough suppressants is not recommended as it may lead to a dangerous accumulation of secretions due to the impaired cough reflex.
Antibiotics (e.g., Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, Erythromycin)
Ambroxol may increase the penetration of antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and restlessness. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage may be considered if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Ambrotus should only be administered during pregnancy (especially during the first trimester) and lactation after careful risk-benefit assessment by a physician. Ambroxol is excreted in breast milk.

Lab Monitoring
- No specific laboratory monitoring is generally required for Ambroxol therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on adequate hydration to enhance mucolytic action.
- Caution against concomitant use with antitussives to avoid mucus retention.
- Monitor for signs of severe skin reactions, especially during initial treatment.
- Consider dose adjustment in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Patient Guidelines
- Follow the prescribed dosage and duration of treatment.
- Drink plenty of fluids (water, juice) to help thin mucus.
- Do not take cough suppressants concurrently without consulting a doctor.
- If symptoms persist or worsen, consult your doctor.
