Amezol 200 mg suspension contains Metronidazole, an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat a wide variety of infections, including parasitic infections and certain bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adult dosage for amoebiasis: 400-800 mg three times daily for 5-10 days (typically tablets). For suspension, dosage based on body weight for specific indications.
Elderly
Dose adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients due to reduced hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is generally required in renal impairment, but caution is advised in severe cases.
How to Take
Take orally, with or after food, to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Shake the suspension well before use. Use a measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole acts as a prodrug. After entering anaerobic bacteria or protozoa, it is reduced by electron transport proteins to reactive cytotoxic compounds. These compounds bind to and damage DNA, inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis and leading to cell death.

Excretion
Mainly excreted in the urine (60-80%) as unchanged drug and metabolites; a small amount (6-15%) is excreted in feces.

Approximately 6-8 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by oxidation with side-chain cleavage and glucuronide conjugation.

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives
- First trimester of pregnancy (relative contraindication)
- Disulfiram use within the last 14 days

Lithium
Increased plasma lithium levels, leading to toxicity.
Warfarin
