Description
Overview of the medicine
Ancef-Forte 250 mg Suspension contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections in children, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and otitis media.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in suspension form; adults usually take tablet/capsule forms. For severe infections, 200-400 mg once or twice daily.
Children
General dose for children is 8 mg/kg body weight/day, given as a single daily dose or in two divided doses. For 250 mg/5 ml suspension, this translates to specific ml doses based on weight. E.g., for 12.5 kg child, 4 ml once daily.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with severe renal impairment (Creatinine Clearance < 20 ml/min).
How to Take
Ancef-Forte 250 mg Suspension is for oral administration. Shake the bottle well before each use. Can be taken with or without food. Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved 2-6 hours after administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine (approximately 50% of absorbed dose) and bile.
Half life
Plasma half-life is typically 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food can delay absorption but does not significantly alter total absorption.
Metabolism
Cefixime is not extensively metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotic.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin (e.g., anaphylaxis).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases plasma concentrations of Cefixime by decreasing renal excretion.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (INR) and risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of coagulation parameters is recommended.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Store the reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in low concentrations in breast milk; use with caution in lactating mothers.
