Description
Overview of the medicine
Antazol 0.05% Nasal Drop contains Xylometazoline Hydrochloride, a topical decongestant used to relieve nasal congestion due to colds, allergies, and sinusitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
2-3 drops in each nostril, 2-3 times daily, not for more than 7 consecutive days.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage; use with caution and under medical advice if underlying conditions exist.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For nasal administration only. Tilt head back, apply drops into each nostril, and keep head tilted for a short while. Clean the dropper after use.
Mechanism of Action
Xylometazoline is an alpha-adrenergic agonist that acts on alpha-adrenergic receptors in the arterioles of the nasal mucosa, causing vasoconstriction. This reduces blood flow to the area, leading to decreased swelling and congestion.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of decongestant action usually occurs within 5-10 minutes.
Excretion
Not primarily applicable for local nasal administration; minimal systemic excretion of any absorbed drug.
Half life
Not significant due to local action and minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs after topical nasal administration. The action is primarily local.
Metabolism
Minimal, if any, systemic metabolism due to very low systemic absorption.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to xylometazoline or any component of the formulation
- •Patients with transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or surgery exposing the dura mater
- •Narrow-angle glaucoma
- •Rhinitis sicca (dry rhinitis)
- •Children under 6 years (for 0.05% strength, usually 0.025% is for younger children)
Drug Interactions
Tricyclic Antidepressants
May potentiate the pressor effects of xylometazoline, leading to increased risk of hypertension.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Concurrent use or within 14 days of discontinuing MAOIs may lead to hypertensive crisis.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is rare with proper topical use. Excessive or prolonged use, or accidental oral ingestion, may lead to systemic effects such as hypertension, tachycardia, central nervous system depression, drowsiness, and coma, especially in young children. Treatment is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution and only if clearly needed, after consulting a doctor. Minimal systemic absorption but data on human pregnancy and lactation are limited.
