Description
Overview of the medicine
Antima 100 mg Suspension contains Albendazole, an anthelmintic medication used to treat various parasitic worm infections in humans.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For children 2 years and above and adults: For Ascariasis, Trichuriasis, Hookworm, Enterobiasis: 400 mg (e.g., two 100 mg suspensions or one 400 mg tablet) as a single dose. For children 1-2 years: 200 mg (e.g., one 100 mg suspension taken twice or one 200 mg suspension) as a single dose.

How to Take
Shake well before use. Can be taken with or without food, but taking with a fatty meal significantly increases absorption for systemic infections. For intestinal infections, food intake is less critical but still recommended.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole acts by inhibiting the polymerization of beta-tubulin, leading to the disruption of parasite motility and glucose uptake, ultimately causing the worm's death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Not well defined; clinical effects are usually observed within a few days to weeks depending on the infection.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the bile; a small amount is excreted in urine as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 8-12 hours for the active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; absorption is significantly increased with a fatty meal.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to the primary active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to albendazole or any component of the suspension
- Pregnancy (especially first trimester)
Drug Interactions

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, dizziness, and liver enzyme elevation. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; gastric lavage may be considered.

Albendazole is contraindicated during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, due to potential teratogenic effects. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during and for at least one month after treatment. Use during lactation is generally discouraged; consult a doctor.
