Description
Overview of the medicine
Anvert 25 mg tablet is an antihistamine used to relieve anxiety, tension, and to treat itching caused by allergic conditions. It also has a sedative effect, often used for short-term management.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For anxiety: 50-100 mg daily in divided doses. For pruritus: 25 mg at bedtime, or 25 mg 3-4 times daily.
Elderly
Start with lower doses, e.g., 12.5 mg 3-4 times daily, due to increased sensitivity and reduced clearance. Maximum 50 mg/day for anxiety.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction by 50% or more may be necessary; consult a physician based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Oral, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Primarily acts as an H1-receptor antagonist, blocking histamine action. It also exhibits anticholinergic, antiemetic, and sedative properties due to its central nervous system depression.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
15-30 minutes
Excretion
Excreted mainly via urine, as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 14-20 hours in adults, longer in elderly and renally impaired patients.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are typically reached within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, metabolized to cetirizine, its active carboxylic acid metabolite.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to hydroxyzine, cetirizine, levocetirizine, or any component of the formulation.
- •Known acquired or congenital QT interval prolongation.
- •Early pregnancy (first trimester) and lactation.

Drug Interactions
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids)
Increased sedative effects and central nervous system depression.
Anticholinergics (e.g., atropine, tricyclic antidepressants)
Additive anticholinergic effects like dry mouth, constipation, and urinary retention.
QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., antiarrhythmics like amiodarone, some antipsychotics, antibiotics like moxifloxacin)
Increased risk of QT prolongation and life-threatening arrhythmias.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include severe sedation, confusion, hypotension, tachycardia, respiratory depression, and potentially seizures or coma. Treatment is supportive, including gastric lavage, activated charcoal, and symptomatic management of vital signs. No specific antidote exists.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally contraindicated during the first trimester of pregnancy due to potential teratogenic risks. Use with caution in later trimesters and during lactation only if potential benefits outweigh risks, under strict medical supervision.
