Overview of the medicine
Escitalopram is an antidepressant belonging to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. It is used to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initially 10 mg once daily, may be increased to a maximum of 20 mg daily.
Elderly
Initially 5 mg once daily, may be increased to 10 mg daily.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. Caution advised in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally once daily, with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Escitalopram selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin at the presynaptic neuronal membrane, increasing serotonin concentrations in the synaptic cleft.
