Description
Overview of the medicine
Aristomox CV is a broad-spectrum antibiotic combination containing Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid. It is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections, including those caused by beta-lactamase producing bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg/125 mg tablet every 8 hours, or 875 mg/125 mg tablet every 12 hours, depending on infection severity.
Elderly
Dosage should be adjusted based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is necessary based on creatinine clearance (e.g., 500 mg/125 mg every 12-24 hours for severe impairment).
How to Take
Take with meals to minimize potential gastrointestinal intolerance. Swallow whole, do not chew or crush. For suspension, shake well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 1-2 hours
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine by renal tubular secretion and glomerular filtration.
Half life
Amoxicillin: 1-1.5 hours; Clavulanic acid: 1 hour
Absorption
Both amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Amoxicillin is minimally metabolized; Clavulanic acid is extensively metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or any penicillin.
- History of jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with amoxicillin/clavulanate.
- Severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min) without appropriate dosage adjustment.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases amoxicillin levels by decreasing renal tubular secretion.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of rash, especially in hyperuricemic patients.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate toxicity due to reduced renal excretion.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May prolong prothrombin time; monitor INR closely.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include gastrointestinal upset, fluid and electrolyte imbalance. Treatment is supportive; hemodialysis can be used to remove the drug from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed. Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.

Lab Monitoring
- Monitor liver function tests periodically during prolonged therapy.
- Monitor renal function in patients with renal impairment.
- Periodic assessment of hematopoietic function during prolonged therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Prescribe judiciously to avoid antibiotic resistance. Counsel patients on completing the full course. Be aware of potential for hepatotoxicity, especially in elderly patients or those with pre-existing liver conditions.
- Assess renal function before prescribing and adjust dose as necessary.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve.
- Do not share this medication with others.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
