Description
Overview of the medicine
Arotrix-5-W Cream is a topical antiviral medication containing Acyclovir, used for the treatment of skin and mucous membrane infections caused by herpes simplex virus, including initial and recurrent genital herpes and herpes labialis (cold sores).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply to the affected areas five times daily at approximately 4-hour intervals for 4 to 10 days. Treatment should be initiated as early as possible after the onset of signs or symptoms.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients when used topically.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for topical acyclovir in patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
Apply a thin layer of cream to the lesions and the surrounding area using a clean finger or cotton swab, ensuring complete coverage. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application.
Mechanism of Action
Acyclovir is a synthetic purine nucleoside analogue that selectively inhibits viral DNA replication. It is phosphorylated to its active triphosphate form primarily by viral thymidine kinase, which then interferes with viral DNA polymerase and terminates viral DNA chain elongation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Local action begins upon application.
Excretion
Minimal systemic excretion; primarily local action.
Half life
Not applicable for topical use due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Systemic absorption of acyclovir following topical application to intact or abraded skin is minimal. Trace amounts may be detected in the urine.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism following topical application.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Acyclovir, valacyclovir, or any component of the cream.
Drug Interactions
None
Topical acyclovir has minimal systemic absorption, making clinically significant drug interactions unlikely.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is highly unlikely with topical application due to minimal systemic absorption. Accidental ingestion of the cream is generally not associated with serious toxicity.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Acyclovir is considered relatively safe for topical use during pregnancy and lactation due to minimal systemic absorption. However, it should be used only if clearly needed and after consulting a healthcare professional.
