Description
Overview of the medicine
Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist used to prevent nausea and vomiting.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
8 mg orally twice daily or 16 mg orally once daily.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients with hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
Place the ODT on the tongue, where it will disintegrate in seconds, then swallow with saliva. No water is needed.
Mechanism of Action
Ondansetron selectively blocks 5-HT3 receptors located peripherally on vagal nerve terminals and centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) of the area postrema.

Excreted in the urine and feces.

Approximately 4 hours.

Rapidly absorbed after oral administration.

Metabolized in the liver via multiple enzymatic pathways.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to ondansetron or any of its excipients
- •Concomitant use of apomorphine
Drug Interactions
Tramadol
Increased risk of serotonin syndrome.
Apomorphine
Increased risk of profound hypotension and loss of consciousness.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include vision abnormalities, constipation, and hypotension. Treatment should be supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category B: Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Caution should be exercised when administering ondansetron to a nursing woman.
