Description
Overview of the medicine
Arthanib is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for the relief of pain, inflammation, and fever. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and various musculoskeletal pain.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250 mg orally, two to three times daily, or as directed by a physician. Maximum dose: 750 mg/day.
Elderly
Start with the lowest effective dose and monitor for adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose adjustment may be necessary in severe impairment. Not recommended in severe renal failure.
How to Take
Arthanib tablets should be taken orally, preferably with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Arthanib exerts its therapeutic effects primarily by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), which is involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are inflammatory mediators that cause pain, fever, and inflammation. By inhibiting COX, Arthanib reduces prostaglandin production, thereby alleviating these symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via urine, with a small portion in feces.
Half life
Approximately 2-4 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Arthanib or other NSAIDs
- Active gastrointestinal bleeding or peptic ulcer
- Severe renal or hepatic impairment
- Severe heart failure
- Third trimester of pregnancy
- History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Increased plasma lithium levels, leading to toxicity.
Diuretics
Reduced diuretic effect and increased risk of renal impairment.
Methotrexate
Increased methotrexate toxicity.
ACE inhibitors/ARBs
Reduced antihypertensive effect and increased risk of renal impairment.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
Increased risk of bleeding.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, lethargy, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered if ingested recently.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Not recommended in the third trimester due to risk of premature closure of the ductus arteriosus and renal dysfunction in the fetus. Use with caution in the first and second trimesters only if potential benefit outweighs risk. Lactation: Small amounts may pass into breast milk; use with caution or consider alternatives.
