Description
Overview of the medicine
Artigo 20 mg tablet is a combination medication containing cinnarizine and dimenhydrinate, primarily used for the symptomatic treatment of vertigo, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting associated with Meniere's disease and other vestibular disorders.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One tablet (Cinnarizine 20 mg + Dimenhydrinate 40 mg) three times daily. Maximum dose is 3 tablets per day.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution advised. Lower doses may be considered if necessary.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment recommended, but use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take tablets orally with water, preferably after meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Cinnarizine, a calcium channel blocker, inhibits calcium influx into vestibular sensory cells, thereby reducing vestibular excitability. Dimenhydrinate, an antihistamine with anticholinergic properties, acts as an antiemetic and antivertigo agent by depressing overstimulated labyrinthine function and blocking muscarinic receptors.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Metabolites of both drugs are primarily excreted in the urine, with a small portion eliminated in feces.
Half life
Cinnarizine: Approximately 4 hours. Dimenhydrinate: Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Both cinnarizine and dimenhydrinate are well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-4 hours for cinnarizine and 1-2 hours for dimenhydrinate.
Metabolism
Both drugs are extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily via cytochrome P450 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cinnarizine, dimenhydrinate, or other antihistamines.
- Acute angle-closure glaucoma.
- Prostatic hypertrophy.
- Pyloroduodenal obstruction.
- Severe hepatic or renal impairment.
- Epilepsy or other convulsive disorders.
Drug Interactions
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Potentiation of anticholinergic and CNS depressant effects.
Ototoxic drugs (e.g., aminoglycoside antibiotics)
May mask symptoms of ototoxicity.
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, hypnotics, sedatives)
Increased sedative effects.
Anticholinergic drugs (e.g., atropine, tricyclic antidepressants)
Increased anticholinergic side effects.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, dizziness, atropine-like effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention), and rarely, seizures or coma. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage and activated charcoal.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation due to insufficient data and potential risks. Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Clinical Trials
Numerous clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of cinnarizine and dimenhydrinate combination in treating vestibular vertigo. Studies have shown superior efficacy compared to monotherapy with either agent.
Lab Monitoring
- No routine lab monitoring is generally required. However, liver and kidney function tests may be considered in patients with pre-existing impairment during prolonged treatment.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients about potential drowsiness and to avoid activities requiring mental alertness.
- Caution in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, glaucoma, or conditions aggravated by anticholinergic effects.
- Consider dosage reduction in elderly patients or those with severe hepatic/renal impairment if adverse effects occur.
