Description
Overview of the medicine
Asmatab 5 mg Chewable Tablet contains Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It is used for the prevention and long-term treatment of asthma and for the relief of symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For children 6-14 years: 5 mg once daily in the evening. For adults with specific conditions (e.g., EIB), 10 mg is usually prescribed.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally, once daily in the evening. The tablet should be chewed completely before swallowing. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Montelukast selectively blocks the CysLT1 receptor, preventing the binding of cysteinyl leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4). These leukotrienes are potent inflammatory mediators released from various cells, including mast cells and eosinophils, and are involved in the pathophysiology of asthma and allergic rhinitis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical benefits in asthma typically seen within one day.
Excretion
Excreted almost exclusively via the bile in feces.
Half life
Plasma half-life ranges from 2.7 to 5.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in approximately 2-4 hours for chewable tablets.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by cytochrome P450 isoenzymes CYP3A4 and CYP2C9.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Montelukast or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Rifampicin
May decrease montelukast plasma levels by inducing hepatic metabolism.
Phenobarbital

Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include thirst, somnolence, abdominal pain, psychomotor hyperactivity, and headache. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. It is not known whether montelukast is dialyzable.
Pregnancy & Lactation
