Description
Overview of the medicine
Asynta 500 mg Chewable Tablet contains Calcium Carbonate, an antacid used to relieve symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, and upset stomach by neutralizing excess stomach acid.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Chew 1-2 tablets (500-1000 mg) as symptoms occur or as directed by a physician. Do not exceed 7 tablets (3500 mg) in 24 hours.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but monitor for hypercalcemia if used for prolonged periods, especially in those with reduced renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Avoid high doses or prolonged use due to increased risk of hypercalcemia. Consult a doctor for appropriate dosage adjustments.
How to Take
Chew the tablet thoroughly before swallowing. It can be taken with or without food. Do not swallow whole.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium Carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to produce calcium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide. This reaction effectively neutralizes stomach acid, raising the gastric pH and providing relief.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes of administration.
Excretion
Unabsorbed calcium is excreted in feces. Absorbed calcium is primarily excreted via the kidneys.
Half life
Not directly applicable for antacids acting locally. Systemic calcium has a complex pharmacokinetic profile due to bone storage and physiological regulation, with variable half-lives depending on the specific calcium compartment.
Absorption
Approximately 15-30% of ingested calcium is absorbed from the GI tract, depending on factors like diet and vitamin D status. Unabsorbed calcium is excreted in feces.
Metabolism
Calcium carbonate is not metabolized in the liver. It acts locally in the stomach to neutralize acid, and absorbed calcium ions are utilized in various physiological processes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to calcium carbonate or any component of the formulation
- Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- Severe renal impairment
- Nephrolithiasis (history of kidney stones)
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
Absorption may be decreased. Separate administration by at least 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Iron supplements
Calcium may interfere with iron absorption. Take iron supplements at a different time of day.
Tetracycline antibiotics
Calcium can bind to tetracyclines, reducing their absorption. Separate administration by several hours (e.g., 2-3 hours before or 4-6 hours after Asynta).
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics
Similar to tetracyclines, calcium can reduce the absorption of fluoroquinolones. Separate administration by several hours.
Thyroid hormones (Levothyroxine)
Absorption may be decreased. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose primarily include hypercalcemia, which can manifest as nausea, vomiting, constipation, thirst, polyuria (frequent urination), muscle weakness, and confusion. Severe cases may lead to cardiac arrhythmias or renal failure. Treatment involves discontinuation of Asynta, aggressive rehydration with intravenous fluids, and management of hypercalcemia, potentially with loop diuretics or calcitonin.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for occasional use during pregnancy and lactation within recommended doses. For prolonged use or higher doses, consult a healthcare professional to assess the risk of hypercalcemia in the mother and potential effects on the fetus/infant.

YesClinical Trials
Clinical studies have shown that calcium carbonate effectively neutralizes gastric acid, providing rapid and sustained relief from dyspepsia symptoms. Data supports its safety profile for short-term, as-needed use within recommended dosages.
Lab Monitoring
- Serum calcium levels (if used chronically or in patients with renal impairment)
- Renal function tests (e.g., creatinine, BUN) periodically in long-term users.
- Urine calcium (if kidney stone risk is present).
Doctor Notes
- Counsel patients on potential drug interactions, emphasizing the importance of separating administration times for certain medications.
- Advise caution in patients with a history of nephrolithiasis or renal impairment, recommending lower doses or alternative treatments if necessary.
- Educate patients about the signs and symptoms of hypercalcemia and to seek medical attention if they occur, especially with chronic use.
Patient Guidelines
- Always chew the tablet completely before swallowing to ensure proper action and avoid choking.
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage without consulting a healthcare provider.
- If symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks or worsen, seek medical advice.
- Keep this and all medicines out of the reach of children.
Missed Dose Advice
Asynta is generally taken as needed for symptoms. If you forget to take a dose, simply take it when symptoms occur. Do not take extra doses or double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Asynta is not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience any side effects that could impair your concentration or motor skills, avoid driving.
Lifestyle Advice
- To help reduce heartburn, avoid trigger foods such as spicy, fatty, acidic foods, caffeine, and alcohol.
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of large ones.
- Avoid lying down immediately after eating, and elevate the head of your bed if nighttime heartburn is an issue.
