Athexim 500 mg Tablet contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose is 500 mg once daily or 250 mg twice daily. For uncomplicated gonorrhea, a single dose of 500 mg is usually sufficient.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required unless there is significant renal impairment. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance less than 60 mL/min, dosage adjustment is necessary. For CrCl 21-60 mL/min, reduce dose to 300 mg daily. For CrCl < 20 mL/min, reduce dose to 200 mg daily. For 500 mg, consult a physician.
How to Take
Athexim 500 mg Tablet can be taken orally with or without food. To minimize gastrointestinal upset, it may be taken with food.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached in 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Some biliary excretion also occurs.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours, may be prolonged in renal impairment.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Absorption may be slightly increased with food.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized in the body. No active metabolites identified.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time (PT) with or without bleeding. Monitor INR/PT closely.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels reported when co-administered. Monitor carbamazepine levels.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives. Advise additional non-hormonal contraception.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Animal reproduction studies have not demonstrated a fetal risk, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts into breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
