Description
Overview of the medicine
Azelec-20-cream contains Azelaic Acid, a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid that helps treat acne vulgaris and rosacea. It works by reducing the growth of skin bacteria, decreasing inflammation, and unclogging pores.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply thinly to affected areas of the skin twice daily (morning and evening) after washing the skin. Gently massage into the skin. Wash hands immediately after application.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required for renal impairment, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For topical dermatological use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin and rub in gently. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Azelaic acid exhibits bacteriostatic activity against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. It also normalizes keratinization, preventing follicular hyperkeratosis. Furthermore, it has anti-inflammatory properties, reducing neutrophil activity and reactive oxygen species.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Weeks to months for full therapeutic effect (typically 4-8 weeks for acne, longer for rosacea).
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the urine; some metabolized forms also excreted via urine.
Half life
About 12 hours (systemically absorbed portion).
Absorption
Approximately 3-5% of topically applied azelaic acid is systematically absorbed.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized via beta-oxidation to shorter-chain dicarboxylic acids.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to azelaic acid or any other ingredient of the cream.
Drug Interactions
None known
No significant systemic drug interactions are expected with topical azelaic acid due to minimal systemic absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical application. In case of accidental ingestion, consult a doctor immediately.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no harmful effects, but human data are limited. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Minimal systemic absorption suggests low risk during lactation; consult a doctor.
