Description
Overview of the medicine
Azibact 500 mg Tablet contains Azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, skin, ears, eyes, and sexually transmitted diseases.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dose: 500 mg once daily for 3 days OR 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily for 4 days. For certain STIs: a single 1g dose.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required unless severe renal or hepatic impairment is present.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment. Caution advised in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. However, food may decrease peak plasma concentrations but not overall absorption. It is often recommended to take it at the same time each day.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby preventing peptide translocation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects usually observed within hours to days, depending on the infection.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the bile; a small portion is excreted renally.
Half life
Prolonged terminal elimination half-life of 2-4 days (approximately 68 hours), allowing for once-daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 37%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes extensive hepatic metabolism, primarily N-demethylation.
