Description
Overview of the medicine
Azobrin 1% Suspension is an ophthalmic antibiotic used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible microorganisms. It contains Azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Bacterial conjunctivitis: Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) twice daily for 2 days, then 1 drop once daily for 5 days. Trachoma: Single dose of 1 drop in each eye.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Shake well before use. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes before applying Azobrin.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms and, thus, inhibits protein synthesis by blocking transpeptidation. It does not affect nucleic acid synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement often seen within 2-3 days.
Excretion
Mainly via bile and feces for systemically absorbed drug. Minimal excretion via urine with ophthalmic use.
Half life
Systemic half-life is long (2-4 days) but local ocular kinetics differ. Data for ophthalmic use is limited for systemic half-life.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after ocular administration. Local concentrations are high.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, but systemic metabolism is minimal with ophthalmic use.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, any macrolide antibiotic, or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Systemic interactions
None significant for ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C). Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose from ophthalmic administration is unlikely due to small volume and minimal systemic absorption. If accidental oral ingestion occurs, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excretion into breast milk is minimal with ophthalmic use; generally considered safe.
