Description
Overview of the medicine
Baclax 10 mg Tablet contains Baclofen, a muscle relaxant used to treat muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain caused by multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, or other neurological conditions. It works by calming the central nervous system.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initially 5 mg three times daily, gradually increasing by 5 mg increments every 3 days to a maximum of 20 mg three times daily.
Elderly
Lower starting dose and slower titration recommended due to increased sensitivity and potential for adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction is necessary. Start with 5 mg daily and titrate carefully.
How to Take
Take orally with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Do not discontinue abruptly.
Mechanism of Action
Baclofen is a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) mimetic that acts as an agonist at GABA-B receptors. This action reduces the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, leading to muscle relaxation and reduced spasticity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Muscle relaxation effect typically begins within a few hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys (70-80%).
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and extensively absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver (less than 15%).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Baclofen or any component of the formulation.
- Peptic ulcer disease (relative).
- Epilepsy not adequately controlled by therapy.

Increased sedative effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, respiratory depression, seizures, and coma. Treatment is supportive, including gastric lavage, activated charcoal, and respiratory support if needed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Baclofen is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
