Description
Overview of the medicine
Bactin-03 eye ointment is a triple antibiotic combination containing Bacitracin, Neomycin, and Polymyxin B, used to treat bacterial infections of the eye.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount (approx. 1/2 inch ribbon) into the conjunctival sac 3-4 times daily or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Apply a thin ribbon of ointment into the lower conjunctival sac. Avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. Neomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Polymyxin B damages the bacterial cell membrane, increasing permeability. Together, they provide broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid local antibacterial effect, usually within hours.
Excretion
Not significant systemically.
Half life
Not typically reported for topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption. Local tissue concentrations are sustained.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption when applied topically to the eye. Local absorption occurs in the ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Not significant systemically. Any absorbed drug would be metabolized via usual pathways.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Bacitracin, Neomycin, Polymyxin B, or any other component of the formulation.
- •Viral or fungal eye infections (as antibiotics are ineffective).
Drug Interactions
Other topical ophthalmic preparations
If using other eye drops or ointments, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications to avoid dilution or wash-out.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is highly unlikely with topical ophthalmic application. If accidentally ingested, seek medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation should be done with caution and only if clearly needed, after consultation with a physician. Minimal systemic absorption reduces risk.
