Description
Overview of the medicine
Bactoderm 2% w/w Ointment contains Mupirocin, a topical antibiotic used to treat bacterial skin infections like impetigo and folliculitis. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount to the affected area 2 to 3 times daily for 5 to 10 days.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment needed.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment needed as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash hands before and after applying the ointment. A sterile gauze dressing may be used to cover the treated area if desired. Avoid contact with eyes.
Mechanism of Action
Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme necessary for the synthesis of bacterial proteins. This action prevents the incorporation of isoleucine into bacterial proteins, leading to bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement typically seen within 3-5 days.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via kidneys as monic acid.
Half life
Systemically absorbed mupirocin is rapidly metabolized and excreted. Systemic half-life is very short (20-40 minutes).
Absorption
Systemic absorption is minimal following topical application to intact skin. Absorption may be increased through damaged skin.
Metabolism
Rapidly metabolized to inactive monic acid.
