Description
Overview of the medicine
Mupirocin is an antibiotic used topically to treat bacterial skin infections caused by susceptible organisms, including impetigo, folliculitis, and boils. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount of Bactrocin Ointment to the affected area 2-3 times daily for 5-10 days. A sterile gauze dressing may be used.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustments are needed. Use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No special dosage adjustments are needed due to minimal systemic absorption. However, caution should be exercised in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment when applying to large surface areas.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin layer of ointment to the affected skin area after thoroughly cleaning it. Gently rub it in. Wash hands before and after application.
Mechanism of Action
Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme crucial for the incorporation of isoleucine into bacterial proteins.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, symptomatic improvement often within 3-5 days.
Excretion
Primarily via urine as the inactive monic acid metabolite.
Half life
Approximately 17-40 minutes (systemic, after absorption).
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Absorption may be increased if applied to damaged skin or large areas.
Metabolism
Rapidly metabolized to an inactive metabolite, monic acid, primarily in the skin and plasma.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any of the excipients.
- Not for ophthalmic or intranasal use (unless specifically Bactrocin Nasal Ointment).
- Avoid use on large open wounds or burns due to potential for increased systemic absorption.
Drug Interactions
Chloramphenicol
In vitro studies have shown that chloramphenicol may be antagonistic to mupirocin. Avoid concurrent use.
Other topical preparations
Do not mix with other topical preparations as this may dilute Bactrocin and reduce its antibacterial activity.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental ingestion of Bactrocin Ointment is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to poor systemic absorption. Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic effects but may lead to local irritation. In case of accidental ingestion, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be given.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Limited data from human pregnancies indicate no increased risk of major birth defects or miscarriage with mupirocin. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is unknown if mupirocin is excreted in human milk, but due to minimal systemic absorption, adverse effects on breastfed infants are unlikely. Use with caution during lactation.

YesClinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of mupirocin in treating various bacterial skin infections, including impetigo caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Studies confirm its comparable efficacy to oral antibiotics for certain superficial skin infections.
Lab Monitoring
- Generally not required for topical use. Culture and sensitivity tests may be performed before treatment to confirm susceptibility.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of completing the full course of treatment to prevent recurrence and development of resistance.
- Advise patients on proper hygiene to minimize transmission of infection.
- Be aware of potential for allergic contact dermatitis, especially with prolonged use or in patients with a history of skin sensitivities.
Patient Guidelines
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the ointment.
- Avoid getting the ointment in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
- Do not cover the treated area with a bandage unless directed by your doctor.
- Do not use for more than 10 days without consulting your doctor. Follow the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve.
Missed Dose Advice
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Bactrocin Ointment is not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, as systemic absorption is minimal.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good personal hygiene to prevent the spread of infection.
- Avoid sharing towels, washcloths, or other personal items that may spread the infection.
- Keep the infected area clean and dry.
