Description
Overview of the medicine
Bantovet-CL-01-1-Ointment is a combination medication containing a potent corticosteroid (Clobetasol Propionate) and an aminoglycoside antibiotic (Neomycin Sulfate). It is used for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions that are complicated by secondary bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area once or twice daily. Treatment should be limited to a maximum of 2 consecutive weeks. Do not exceed 50g per week.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but use with caution due to potentially thinner skin and increased susceptibility to side effects. Consult a physician.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for topical use due to minimal systemic absorption. However, caution is advised in severe renal impairment if large areas are treated or prolonged use is anticipated.
How to Take
For external topical use only. Apply a thin film to the affected skin area and rub in gently. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Do not use with occlusive dressings unless specifically advised by a physician.
Mechanism of Action
Clobetasol Propionate is a highly potent corticosteroid that provides anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive actions. Neomycin Sulfate is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, leading to bactericidal effects against susceptible organisms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action at the site of application.
Excretion
Absorbed Clobetasol Propionate is primarily excreted via the kidneys and bile. Neomycin, if absorbed, is largely excreted unchanged in the urine.
Half life
Not well established for topical formulations due to predominant local action and minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs when applied topically, especially through intact skin. Absorption may increase with occlusive dressings, prolonged use, or application to large surface areas or damaged skin.
Metabolism
Any systemically absorbed Clobetasol Propionate is primarily metabolized in the liver. Neomycin is poorly absorbed from intact skin.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Clobetasol Propionate, Neomycin Sulfate, or any other component of the ointment.
- Untreated fungal, viral (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella), or parasitic infections of the skin.
- Rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, pruritus without inflammation.
- Skin lesions caused by tuberculosis or syphilis.
- Children under 1 year of age.
Drug Interactions
Other Aminoglycosides
Although systemic absorption is low, theoretical risk of increased ototoxicity or nephrotoxicity if used concurrently with systemic aminoglycosides, especially on broken skin or large areas.
Systemic Corticosteroids/Immunosuppressants
Concurrent use of systemic corticosteroids or immunosuppressants may increase the risk of systemic corticosteroid side effects, although minimal with topical application.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Acute overdose with topical application is unlikely. In the event of chronic overuse or misuse, symptoms of hypercorticism (e.g., Cushing's syndrome) may occur due to systemic absorption of Clobetasol Propionate. Local adverse effects such as skin atrophy may also be prominent. Discontinue use gradually under medical supervision.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy or lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Avoid extensive or prolonged use. Consult your doctor.

Clinical Trials
Clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of Clobetasol Propionate in reducing inflammation and pruritus, and Neomycin Sulfate in treating susceptible bacterial skin infections. The combination has shown synergistic benefits in conditions where both inflammation and bacterial infection are present.
Lab Monitoring
- No routine lab monitoring is required for typical short-term topical use. For prolonged use, especially over large areas or in children, monitor for signs of systemic corticosteroid absorption (e.g., plasma cortisol levels) if clinically indicated.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of short-term use (maximum 2 weeks) to minimize local and systemic side effects.
- Advise patients on proper application technique and to avoid using occlusive dressings unless specifically indicated.
- Monitor for signs of secondary infection or lack of improvement, which may suggest antibiotic resistance or alternative diagnosis.
Patient Guidelines
- For external use only. Do not ingest.
- Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
- Do not apply to open wounds or broken skin.
- Do not use for longer than the prescribed duration (maximum 2 weeks) without consulting your doctor.
- Do not cover the treated area with bandages or other occlusive dressings unless specifically instructed by a healthcare professional.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Bantovet-CL-01-1-Ointment is not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, as it is a topical preparation with minimal systemic effects.
Lifestyle Advice
- Keep the affected skin clean and dry.
- Avoid irritants or allergens that may worsen the skin condition.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing to minimize irritation.
