Description
Overview of the medicine
Beclocort HFA 100 mcg Inhaler contains Beclomethasone Dipropionate, an inhaled corticosteroid, used for the maintenance treatment of asthma and for the prophylaxis of asthma symptoms. It helps to reduce inflammation in the airways, making breathing easier.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 100-200 mcg twice daily, maximum 400 mcg twice daily.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, adjust based on individual response.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required.
How to Take
For oral inhalation only. Shake the inhaler well before use. Exhale fully, place mouthpiece in mouth, inhale slowly and deeply while pressing down on the canister. Hold breath for 10 seconds, then exhale slowly. Rinse mouth with water after use to reduce risk of oral candidiasis.
Mechanism of Action
Beclomethasone Dipropionate is a glucocorticoid that exerts anti-inflammatory effects by binding to glucocorticoid receptors in the cytoplasm of target cells. This complex translocates to the nucleus, modifying gene expression to decrease the synthesis of inflammatory mediators (e.g., cytokines, chemokines, prostaglandins, leukotrienes) and increase the synthesis of anti-inflammatory proteins (e.g., lipocortin). It also reduces the number and activity of inflammatory cells in the airways.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects typically seen within 1-2 weeks, maximum benefit in 3-4 weeks.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via feces, with some renal excretion.
Half life
Beclomethasone-17-monopropionate (active metabolite) has a half-life of approximately 2.8 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the lungs, with a significant first-pass metabolism. Systemic bioavailability is low.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to active metabolites, mainly beclomethasone-17-monopropionate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma where intensive measures are required
- Hypersensitivity to beclomethasone dipropionate or any excipient
Drug Interactions
Other corticosteroids
Concomitant use may increase risk of systemic corticosteroid effects.
Ritonavir, Cobicistat
May increase systemic exposure to beclomethasone.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from direct sunlight and heat. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely due to the low systemic bioavailability. Chronic excessive doses may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects (e.g., Cushing's syndrome, adrenal suppression). Treatment is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Small amounts may pass into breast milk; use with caution. Consult doctor.
