Cefalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usual adult dose is 250 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours or 500 mg every 8-12 hours, depending on severity.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary based on renal function.

How to Take

Cefalexin may increase metformin levels; monitor for hypoglycemia.
Probenecid
May decrease renal excretion of cefalexin, increasing its blood levels.

Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, and diarrhea. Management is primarily supportive; activated charcoal may be considered if recent.
