Description
Overview of the medicine
Benoxiclin 1.5% Topical Gel is a dermatological preparation used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. It helps reduce inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions by targeting the bacteria responsible for acne and promoting skin exfoliation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer of gel to the affected areas of the face and/or trunk once daily, preferably in the evening, after washing and drying the skin thoroughly.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required; use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash hands before and after application. Apply a pea-sized amount to cover the entire affected area. Avoid contact with eyes, lips, mouth, and mucous membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Benoxiclin exerts its action through a dual mechanism. It possesses antimicrobial properties against *Propionibacterium acnes*, reducing bacterial load on the skin. Additionally, it has keratolytic effects, which help unclog pores and prevent the formation of new acne lesions by promoting the shedding of dead skin cells.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement typically observed within 2-4 weeks of consistent use, with maximal effects after 8-12 weeks.
Excretion
Primarily via epidermal shedding. Any minimally absorbed drug is likely excreted renally as metabolites.
Half life
Not significantly relevant due to minimal systemic absorption; local effects persist for several hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs following topical application. Primarily acts locally on the skin surface.
Metabolism
Local metabolism within the skin cells, likely into inactive metabolites. Systemic metabolism is negligible.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Benoxiclin or any component of the gel
- •History of severe allergic reactions to topical retinoids or antibacterials
Drug Interactions
Strong oxidizing agents
Avoid concurrent use with strong oxidizing agents as it might reduce the efficacy of Benoxiclin or cause skin discoloration.
Other topical acne preparations
Concurrent use with other topical acne treatments (e.g., other retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid) may increase skin irritation, redness, and peeling. Use with caution and consult a healthcare professional.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Over-application may result in marked redness, peeling, or discomfort. In such cases, discontinue use temporarily. If ingested, seek medical attention immediately. Symptomatic and supportive treatment should be provided.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or lactation. Limited data available. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant.
