Description
Overview of the medicine
Benozol-1 Suspension contains Albendazole, an anthelmintic drug used for the treatment of various parasitic worm infestations in humans.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For common intestinal nematodes (e.g., roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, pinworm): 400 mg as a single dose. For pinworm, repeat dose after 2-3 weeks if necessary. For Strongyloidiasis or Taeniasis: 400 mg once daily for 3 days. For Hydatid disease: 400 mg twice daily for 28 days, may be repeated. For Neurocysticercosis: 400 mg twice daily for 8-30 days depending on condition.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally required, but close monitoring of renal and hepatic function is advised.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is reported to be necessary for patients with renal impairment, but caution is advised due to limited data.
How to Take
Take Benozol-1 Suspension orally with food, preferably a fatty meal, to enhance absorption. Shake the bottle well before each use. A measuring spoon or cup should be used for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole selectively binds to beta-tubulin in helminths, inhibiting microtubule polymerization. This leads to impaired glucose uptake, depletion of glycogen stores, and ultimately the death of the worm.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Variable, depends on the type and location of infection. Peak plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide are reached in 2-5 hours.
Excretion
Albendazole sulfoxide and other metabolites are primarily excreted via bile (major route) and to a lesser extent via urine.
Half life
Approximately 8-12 hours for the active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (less than 5%). Absorption is significantly increased when taken with a fatty meal.
Metabolism
Rapidly and extensively metabolized in the liver to albendazole sulfoxide, which is the primary active metabolite responsible for anthelmintic activity.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to albendazole or other benzimidazole derivatives.
- Pregnancy (especially first trimester) due to potential teratogenic effects.
- Severe hepatic impairment.
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
Albendazole may decrease the plasma levels of theophylline, requiring monitoring and possible dose adjustment of theophylline.
Grapefruit juice
May increase the systemic exposure to albendazole and its active metabolite.
Cimetidine, Dexamethasone, Praziquantel
These drugs may increase the plasma concentration of albendazole sulfoxide, potentially leading to increased side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
In cases of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered shortly after ingestion to reduce absorption. Closely monitor vital signs and manage any adverse effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Albendazole should not be used in pregnant women, especially during the first trimester, due to potential teratogenic effects. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is excreted in human milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers, weighing benefits against risks.

Albendazole has undergone extensive clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety profile in treating various helminthic and protozoal infections. Numerous studies support its use as a broad-spectrum anthelmintic.
Lab Monitoring
- Liver function tests (transaminases) should be performed before starting treatment and every two weeks during prolonged high-dose therapy.
- Complete blood count (CBC) should be monitored at the start of each 28-day cycle of treatment and every two weeks during treatment for neurocysticercosis or hydatid disease.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of taking albendazole with food for optimal absorption, particularly for systemic infections.
- Advise regular monitoring of liver function tests and complete blood count during extended courses of treatment.
- Counsel patients on proper hygiene and sanitation practices to prevent reinfection, especially in endemic areas.
- Strictly avoid use in the first trimester of pregnancy; advise effective contraception during and for one month post-treatment for women of childbearing potential.
Patient Guidelines
- Always take the medication with food to improve absorption.
- Complete the full prescribed course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to ensure complete eradication of worms.
- Shake the suspension bottle well before each use for consistent dosing.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
- Avoid becoming pregnant during and for at least one month after treatment with albendazole.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Albendazole may cause dizziness in some patients. Patients should be advised to exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until they know how the medication affects them.
Lifestyle Advice
- Practice good personal hygiene, including frequent hand washing, especially after using the toilet and before eating, to prevent reinfection.
- Ensure proper sanitation and avoid consuming raw or undercooked meat and contaminated water.
- Treat all household members or close contacts simultaneously, especially for pinworm infections, to prevent cross-infection.
