Description
Overview of the medicine
Bepotastine 0.15% ophthalmic solution is a topical histamine H1-receptor antagonist indicated for the treatment of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for renal impairment, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to create a pouch. Instill one drop and close eye gently. Do not touch dropper tip to eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Bepotastine is a direct H1-receptor antagonist and inhibits the release of histamine from mast cells. It prevents histamine from binding to H1 receptors, thereby reducing itching and other allergic symptoms.

Primarily excreted via urine as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 2-4 hours (systemic, but primary effect is local).
Absorption
Systemic absorption is minimal following topical ocular administration.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP3A4) in vitro, but systemic exposure is low.

Other eye drops

Overdose
Topical ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to lead to systemic toxicity. If overdose occurs, flush eye(s) with lukewarm water. Symptomatic and supportive treatment may be provided if significant ingestion occurs.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether bepotastine is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
