Description
Overview of the medicine
Besone-01 Ointment contains Betamethasone Valerate, a potent corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation and itching in various skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected area once or twice daily, or as directed by physician. Do not use for more than 2 weeks continuously without medical advice, especially on the face.
Elderly
Same as adults, but use with caution and for shorter durations due to thinner and more fragile skin.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for topical use, but systemic absorption should be monitored if large areas are treated or prolonged use is necessary.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin film to the affected skin area and rub in gently until it disappears. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or other mucous membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Betamethasone valerate works by activating natural substances in the skin to reduce swelling, redness, and itching. It inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, within hours of application for symptomatic relief.
Excretion
Metabolites are excreted mainly in urine and bile.
Half life
Not specifically defined for topical application due to local action and varying systemic absorption. Systemically, corticosteroids have variable half-lives.
Absorption
Systemic absorption varies with vehicle, integrity of epidermal barrier, and use of occlusive dressings. Enhanced absorption with broken skin or occlusive dressings.
Metabolism
Primarily in the liver to inactive metabolites. Some metabolism may occur in the skin.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to betamethasone or any component of the formulation
- •Untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral skin infections (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella)
- •Perioral dermatitis
- •Rosacea
- •Acne vulgaris
- •Pruritus without inflammation
Drug Interactions
Systemic Corticosteroids
Increased risk of systemic side effects if significant topical absorption occurs.
CYP3A4 Inhibitors (e.g., Ritonavir, Itraconazole)
May increase systemic exposure to corticosteroids, especially with prolonged or extensive use.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Close the cap tightly after each use.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause acute systemic problems. Chronic overdose or misuse (e.g., applying to large areas, under occlusion) may lead to systemic effects such as Cushing's syndrome, adrenal suppression, hyperglycemia, and glucosuria.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation. Consult a doctor. Generally avoided during early pregnancy. Small amounts may pass into breast milk, but systemic effects on the infant are unlikely with localized topical use. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration.
