Description
Overview of the medicine
BFC-009 Eye Drop is an ophthalmic solution containing Bromfenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), used to treat inflammation and pain following cataract surgery.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill one drop into the affected eye(s) once daily, starting 1 day prior to cataract surgery and continuing for 14 days post-surgery.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required; minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket, instill one drop, then gently close the eye. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface. If more than one ophthalmic medication is used, administer at least 5 minutes apart.
Mechanism of Action
Bromfenac inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by interfering with the cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes. Prostaglandins are mediators of inflammation and pain, so inhibiting their synthesis reduces these symptoms in the eye.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour for pain relief, anti-inflammatory effects seen within days.
Excretion
Mainly through ocular surface drainage; minimal systemic excretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 hours in ocular tissues.
Absorption
Limited systemic absorption following topical ocular administration. Primarily absorbed by ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism in ocular tissues; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Bromfenac or any components of the formulation.
- Hypersensitivity to other NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen) as cross-sensitivity may occur.
- Patients with bleeding disorders.
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic NSAIDs
Concurrent use with other topical NSAIDs is not recommended.
Corticosteroids (topical ophthalmic)
Concomitant use with topical corticosteroids may increase the potential for corneal healing problems in susceptible patients.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20°C to 25°C). Protect from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
An overdose is unlikely with topical ophthalmic administration. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic and supportive treatment may be considered. Eye irritation from excessive topical use can be managed by rinsing the eye with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution is advised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor.
