Description
Overview of the medicine
Bidicod 75 mg Syrup is a medication used for the symptomatic relief of cough and associated respiratory discomfort. It acts as both a cough suppressant and an expectorant, helping to reduce the frequency and intensity of coughing while also aiding in the expulsion of mucus from the airways.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 ml (150 mg Bidicod) orally every 6-8 hours, not exceeding 4 doses in 24 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required; however, caution is advised in patients with impaired renal or hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose reduction may be necessary in severe renal impairment. Consult a physician.
Pediatric_6-12_years
5 ml (75 mg Bidicod) orally every 6-8 hours, not exceeding 4 doses in 24 hours.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Use a measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing. Shake the bottle well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Bidicod exerts its antitussive effect by acting centrally on the cough center in the medulla, elevating the cough threshold. Its expectorant action involves increasing the volume and decreasing the viscosity of respiratory secretions, thereby facilitating their removal by ciliary action and coughing.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via urine as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 4-8 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism via cytochrome P450 enzymes.

Concomitant use may lead to serotonin syndrome, characterized by hyperpyrexia, muscle rigidity, and mental status changes.
CNS Depressants
May potentiate the sedative effects of alcohol, antihistamines, psychotropics, and other CNS depressants.
CYP2D6 Inhibitors
Drugs like quinidine, fluoxetine, and paroxetine may increase Bidicod levels due to inhibition of its metabolism.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, ataxia, nystagmus, and respiratory depression. In severe cases, coma may occur. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment, including gastric lavage or activated charcoal if recent ingestion, and respiratory support if necessary.
