Description
Overview of the medicine
Bilaben 20 mg tablet contains Bilastine, a non-sedating, long-acting H1-antihistamine used for the symptomatic treatment of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
20 mg once daily.
Elderly
No dose adjustment is required.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is required for mild, moderate, or severe renal impairment. However, caution should be exercised in patients with severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally with water, preferably one hour before or two hours after intake of food or fruit juice. Taking it with food significantly reduces its bioavailability.
Mechanism of Action
Bilastine is a selective H1-receptor antagonist. It prevents the binding of histamine to H1-receptors, thereby inhibiting the effects of histamine and alleviating allergic symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Approximately 67% excreted via feces and 33% via urine, primarily as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 13-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached in approximately 1 hour.
Metabolism
Bilastine is minimally metabolized and excreted largely unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to the active substance bilastine or to any of the excipients.
Drug Interactions
Diltiazem
Concomitant use with diltiazem (60 mg once daily) increased Bilastine plasma Cmax by 1.7-fold.
Erythromycin
Concomitant use with erythromycin (500 mg t.i.d.) increased Bilastine plasma AUC by 2.6-fold and Cmax by 2-fold.
Ketoconazole
Concomitant use with ketoconazole (400 mg once daily) increased Bilastine plasma AUC by 2-fold and Cmax by 2.2-fold.
Grapefruit juice
Significantly reduces oral bioavailability of Bilastine. Avoid concomitant intake.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. There is no specific antidote for Bilastine.

Bilastine should be used during pregnancy and lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor.
