Description
Overview of the medicine
Bimator 0.03% Eye Drop is an ophthalmic solution containing Bimatoprost, a prostaglandin analog. It is primarily used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
For topical ophthalmic use only. Instill one drop into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. If more than one topical ophthalmic drug is being used, they should be administered at least 5 minutes apart.
Mechanism of Action
Bimatoprost is a synthetic prostamide, structurally related to prostaglandin F2α. It selectively mimics the effects of naturally occurring prostamides. It lowers intraocular pressure by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor through both the trabecular meshwork and uveoscleral pathways, with the latter being the predominant mechanism.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Reduction in IOP typically begins approximately 4 hours after the first dose.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys (67%) and via the feces (25%) as metabolites.
Half life
The systemic half-life of Bimatoprost acid is approximately 45 minutes after intravenous administration. The ocular effects last for at least 24 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed through the cornea and sclera after topical ocular administration. Peak plasma concentrations of Bimatoprost acid, the active metabolite, are reached within 10 minutes post-dosing.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized by beta-oxidation, N-deethylation, and oxidation to various metabolites. No involvement of cytochrome P450 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to bimatoprost or any other component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Other Prostaglandin Analogs
Concomitant use with other prostaglandin analogs might result in paradoxical increases in IOP.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15°C-25°C). Do not freeze. Keep away from direct sunlight.
Overdose
Ocular overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to the low concentration and topical administration. In case of ocular overdose, the eye should be rinsed with lukewarm water. No specific antidote is available.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman, as it is unknown if Bimatoprost is excreted in human milk.
