Description
Overview of the medicine
Biovit-PN Tablet is a combination of B vitamins (B1, B6, and B12) used to treat or prevent vitamin B deficiencies and to support nerve health, particularly in conditions like peripheral neuropathy.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 tablets daily or as directed by the physician. In severe cases, dosage may be increased.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required unless significant renal impairment is present. Follow adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required for mild to moderate impairment. Consult physician for severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water, do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Thiamine (B1) is crucial for carbohydrate metabolism and nerve function. Pyridoxine (B6) is essential for protein, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis. Cyanocobalamin (B12) plays a vital role in red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis, and neurological function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects may be observed within weeks of regular administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally (urine). Excessive amounts of water-soluble vitamins are excreted.
Half life
Thiamine: 9-18 days (elimination). Pyridoxine: ~15-20 days. Cyanocobalamin: 6 days (liver store turnover).
Absorption
Water-soluble vitamins, readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Absorption of B12 is facilitated by intrinsic factor.
Metabolism
Thiamine: metabolized in the liver to active thiamine pyrophosphate. Pyridoxine: primarily converted to pyridoxal phosphate. Cyanocobalamin: stored in the liver, slowly metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Thiamine, Pyridoxine, Cyanocobalamin, or any other component of the formulation.
- Patients receiving Levodopa (due to Pyridoxine interaction).
Drug Interactions
Levodopa
Pyridoxine (B6) may reduce the effectiveness of Levodopa, especially without concomitant carbidopa. This interaction is usually not significant with Levodopa/Carbidopa combinations.
Furosemide
May increase urinary excretion of Thiamine (B1).
Colchicine, Aminoglycosides, PPIs, Metformin
May reduce B12 absorption.
Isoniazid, Penicillamine, Oral Contraceptives
May increase the requirement for Pyridoxine (B6).
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is generally not associated with severe toxicity due to the water-soluble nature of the vitamins. Symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea). High doses of Pyridoxine (B6) over extended periods can cause peripheral neuropathy. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe at recommended doses. High doses should be avoided without consulting a physician. Consult your doctor before use if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Clinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials exist for individual B vitamins concerning their efficacy in deficiency states and neuropathy. The combination formulation is widely used based on the synergistic effects of these vitamins.
Lab Monitoring
- Routine lab monitoring is not typically required for healthy individuals taking recommended doses. For specific deficiency states, blood levels of vitamins may be monitored.
Doctor Notes
- Effective for various neuropathic conditions, particularly when B vitamin deficiency is suspected or confirmed.
- Advise patients on potential interaction with Levodopa.
- Monitor for signs of peripheral neuropathy with prolonged high-dose use, especially of B6.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine regularly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
Biovit-PN Tablet is not known to impair the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients.
- Limit or avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it can deplete B vitamins.
