Description
Overview of the medicine
Broculyt 15 mg Syrup contains Bromhexine Hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent used to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. It is indicated for respiratory conditions associated with excessive or thick mucus.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
15 mg (5 mL) three times daily. Max 45 mg/day.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but caution is advised in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction or increased dosing interval may be necessary in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Orally, with or without food. Use the provided measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Bromhexine works by increasing the secretion of serous mucus in the respiratory tract and reducing the viscosity of mucus by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharide fibers. This action helps to thin and loosen mucus, facilitating its expectoration.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Mucolytic effect usually starts within 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via the kidneys as metabolites. Only a small amount is excreted unchanged.
Half life
Terminal half-life is approximately 15-20 hours due to extensive tissue distribution and slow release.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations achieved within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily via CYP450 enzymes, forming several active metabolites, including ambroxol.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Bromhexine or any component of the formulation.
- •Peptic ulcer disease (relative contraindication due to potential for gastric irritation).
Drug Interactions
Antibiotics
Bromhexine may enhance penetration of antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, erythromycin) into bronchial secretions.
Antitussives
Concomitant use with antitussives may lead to a dangerous buildup of secretions due to the suppressed cough reflex.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gastric irritation. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion is recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category C. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Excreted in breast milk, caution advised in nursing mothers.
